While it functions today as a community library, the building is a reconstruction of the original Irvine Ranch house, a property deeply tied to Southern California history. History of the Irvine Ranch House
The original ranch house was constructed in 1876 by James Irvine I as part of the massive Irvine Ranch, which once encompassed more than 110,000 acres across what is now Orange County. The house later became the residence of James Irvine II, who played a major role in managing and expanding the ranch operations.
Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, James Irvine II moved his family permanently to the ranch house. The property served not only as a family home but also as a center of ranch administration and social activity.
Tragedy struck the household in 1920 when Kathryn Helena Irvine, daughter of James Irvine II and mother of Katie Wheeler, died from complications following childbirth. Her death occurred on the property and is one of the most significant events associated with later paranormal claims.
The original ranch house was destroyed by a fire in 1965. For decades, the site remained vacant until the City of Irvine undertook a historically accurate reconstruction. The replica structure opened in 2008 and was named the Katie Wheeler Library in honor of Kathryn Irvine’s daughter, who was known for her civic involvement and philanthropy.
Transition to a Public Library
The reconstructed building was incorporated into the Orange County Public Libraries system and later transitioned to the Irvine Public Library. The structure was designed to resemble the original Queen Anne Victorian style of the ranch house, using historical photographs and records.
Although the building itself is not original, it stands on the same land as the 19th-century residence, which is central to many of the ghost stories tied to the location.
