The Grey Lady on the A541: Plas Teg, Flintshire

Few buildings in north Wales carry a reputation quite like this one, and the Plas Teg grey lady is the reason most people slow down as they pass. The house stands close to the village of Pontblyddyn in Flintshire, between Wrexham and Mold, a tall Jacobean pile set back from a busy road. It is considered one of the finest examples of Jacobean architecture in Wales, and the finest in North Wales, and it is protected by a Grade I listing. The ghost stories attached to it are old, widely repeated and entirely unverified, which is worth saying at the outset.

Sir John Trevor’s House, Built About 1610

Plas Teg was built by Sir John Trevor I, a prominent courtier of King James I, in about 1610. Sir John died in 1630 and his wife in 1643, which left the house standing empty just as the English Civil War broke out. It was twice raided by the Roundheads. Despite that upheaval, the property continued to pass down through Trevor descendants into the early 20th century, an unusually long single-family tenure for a house of this size.

Requisition, Storage and Advanced Decay

The 20th century treated the house badly. During the Second World War it was requisitioned by the War Office to billet soldiers. In 1945 it was sold to an auctioneers company, which used it for storage. By the early 1950s Plas Teg was in a state of advanced decay and under threat of demolition.

A public outcry followed, and the derelict house received its Grade I listing from Cadw, which protected it from being pulled down. A Trevor descendant, Patrick Trevor-Roper, bought the house and partially restored it with funds from the Historic Buildings Council, then leased it out until 1977, when Mr and Mrs William Llewelyn bought it. The Llewelyns used only parts of the ground floor, and the rest of the building became little more than a ruin.

Cornelia Bayley’s Rescue and the 2025 Auction

In 1986 Cornelia Bayley acquired Plas Teg for £75,000 and set about a programme of works costing £400,000, of which £199,000 came from Cadw. Ten months after buying it she opened the house to the public, while continuing to live there. It closed to the public in 2022 pending repairs.

In 2025 the contents of Plas Teg were auctioned. An article in The Leader that year quoted Mark Baker of the Plas Teg Trust confirming that Bayley has willed the house to the National Trust, which holds covenants over the building, and to the Landmark Trust. The same article reported that the roof needs repairs and that the building is affected by dry rot. Beyond the house itself, the courtyard entrance, walled garden, shrubberies and avenue are listed Grade II in the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.

What People Report Beside the Road

Flintshire is said locally to be a land of spirits and hauntings, and the grey lady of Plas Teg is described as the most popular such entity in north east Wales. The account is consistent: an old woman seen moving across the A541 adjacent to the house, into the path of traffic. That is the substance of it. There is no record of an identified death behind the figure in the source material, and no verified incident to anchor the story. It is a roadside apparition tale of a kind found across Britain, told here about a specific and very visible house.

Later editions of Mark Baker’s history of Plas Teg and the Trevor family address the theories that link the house to Judge Jeffreys, an association readers will encounter repeatedly. Treat those theories as theories.

The house has had a long television career, which has done a good deal to spread its haunted reputation. Ghosthunting With… Girls Aloud was filmed there in 2006. Plas Teg featured on Country House Rescue in 2010, on Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners in 2015, and on Hidden Wales with Will Millard in 2019.

Can You Visit Plas Teg?

Not at present. Plas Teg closed to the public in 2022 pending repairs, and it remains Cornelia Bayley’s private residence. Anyone hoping to see inside should check the official website for current arrangements rather than turning up. The house is clearly visible from the road between Wrexham and Mold, but the A541 is a working road and the grounds are private. Watching for a grey lady from the carriageway is a poor idea for obvious reasons.
