From Prohibition Speakeasy to Haunted Landmark
Perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, the Moss Beach Distillery has been a fixture of the Northern California coast since 1927. Originally called Frank’s Place, it was founded by Frank Torres during Prohibition. Hidden along the rugged shoreline, it became a lively speakeasy where bootleg whiskey was brought ashore by rumrunners.
When Prohibition ended in 1933, the speakeasy transitioned into a legitimate restaurant. Over time it became a beloved coastal dining spot and today is recognized as a California Point of Historical Interest.
The Blue Lady Legend
The Distillery’s reputation extends beyond its food and views. It is most famous for the Blue Lady, a ghost said to haunt the building.
According to lore, the Blue Lady was a married woman who fell in love with the pianist at Frank’s Place. Their affair ended tragically, and she is believed to have died on the beach below. Her spirit, often described as wearing blue, is said to linger in the restaurant.
Patrons and staff have reported:
- Chandeliers swaying on their own
- A woman’s soft voice or laughter in empty rooms
- Cold spots and mysterious touches
- Glimpses of a woman in blue drifting through the dining areas
Paranormal Investigations and Tricks of the Trade
The story became so well known it appeared on Unsolved Mysteries and drew professional ghost hunters. In 2008, the TV show Ghost Hunters discovered that some of the paranormal effects inside were artificially enhanced. A former Disney technician admitted to installing tricks such as hydraulically swaying chandeliers, a “ghost face” in a mirror, and a ringing phone set off by motion sensors.
Yet even with those staged effects revealed, many continue to report unexplained experiences. For locals and visitors alike, the Blue Lady is still very much part of the Distillery’s identity.
