History of Lemp Mansion
The mansion was built in 1868 and became home to the Lemp family in 1876. They were the founders of the Lemp Brewery, one of the earliest and most successful lager beer producers in St. Louis.
The brewery’s rise was fueled by a natural limestone cave system beneath the city. These caves kept beer cool before refrigeration existed, and a tunnel once connected the brewery to the mansion itself. For a while, the Lemps enjoyed wealth, status, and influence across St. Louis.
But the family’s history took a dark turn in the early 1900s. Between 1901 and 1949, multiple members of the Lemp family died by suicide, several of them inside the mansion:

- 1928: Elsa Lemp Wright, though her death occurred in her own home

After Prohibition crippled the brewery, the property fell into decline. By the mid-20th century the mansion was divided into a boarding house before eventually being restored and turned into a restaurant and small inn.
