Reported by visitors & local legend. Stories, not verified claims.

Most ghost stories outlive the buildings that hold them. The Harvard Exit Theatre ghost did the opposite: a woman in 1920s garb was reported inside this Capitol Hill building in Seattle, Washington, and then the reports simply stopped in 1987, decades before the cinema itself closed. That ending is the most unusual thing about the case, and it is worth sitting with before anything else.

Quick orientation. The building went up in 1925, built by the Womans Century Club. It became a cinema in 1969. It stopped being a cinema in 2015. It is not a tourist site, and there is no tour.

The Womans Century Club Built It, and Never Quite Left

The structure was raised in 1925 by the Womans Century Club, and the club has outlasted every other occupant. It still meets in the building at midday on the third Friday of the month, which makes it one of the longer continuous tenancies in the neighborhood.

The club also left a mark on the deed. When the building was sold in 1968, the sale carried a condition that the lobby not be altered. That condition has held: the lobby has not been changed to this day. For a ghost story set among period furnishings, it is a useful detail, because the room most associated with the figure is the one room nobody was permitted to modernize.

How a Clubhouse Became a Movie House in 1969

Jim Osteen and Art Bernstein converted the building into a cinema. Its grand opening preview as a cinema took place on May 20, 1969, with regularly scheduled films beginning the following day. The theater was owned by O’Steen & Harvard Investments and operated by Landmark Theaters.

That arrangement ran until 2015, when developer Scott Shapiro bought the building to convert it into office and restaurant space. The Consulate of Mexico later leased space there, opening around July 2018.

The Woman in 1920s Garb

Reports began to surface that the building was haunted by a woman in 1920s garb. The accounts are reported experience rather than documented event: no death, no accident and no named individual is attached to the figure in the record, and nothing establishes who she was supposed to be. What survives is the description of a woman dressed for the decade in which the building was constructed.

Then the reports ceased in 1987. A haunting with a stop date is unusual, and it invites a plain reading. Ghost sightings in a public venue depend on staff and audiences who talk to each other and to the press, and when that chain breaks, so does the story. Whatever the explanation, the honest summary is that the sightings belong to a finite window in the building’s life as a cinema, not to the building as it stands now.

What Is There Now, and What You Can Actually See

There is no cinema to visit. The screens are gone, the building has been converted to offices and restaurant space, and part of it houses a foreign consulate, which is not a place to wander into looking for an apparition.

The realistic approach is to view the exterior from the street and treat the interior as off limits unless you have business inside. The one piece of the original fabric that survives intact, the unaltered lobby, is protected by a sale condition from 1968 rather than by any ghost story, and it is the strongest reason the building is worth a look at all.
