The Joshua Ward House, located in the heart of Salem, Massachusetts, stands as one of the city’s most infamous haunted locations. Today it operates as The Merchant Hotel, a boutique inn, but its reputation as one of Salem’s most paranormally active sites continues to attract visitors curious about its chilling past.
History of the Joshua Ward House
Built in 1784 for wealthy sea merchant Joshua Ward, the Federal-style brick mansion was among the first grand residences erected after the Revolutionary War. Designed by the noted architect Samuel McIntire, the house symbolized prosperity and growth in Salem’s post-war years.
But the ground it was built on carried a much darker legacy. Before Ward’s mansion, the property had belonged to Sheriff George Corwin, better remembered as the “Strangler” sheriff of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. Corwin was notorious for his brutal treatment of accused “witches,” including pressing victims with stones, starvation, and even alleged strangulation. After his death in 1696, legend holds that Corwin’s body was temporarily interred in the basement of his home to prevent desecration from angry townsfolk.

Over the years, guests and staff at the Joshua Ward House have reported a wide range of unsettling experiences. These include:
- Phantom strangling sensations: Visitors have described the feeling of being choked or short of breath—phenomena often linked to Sheriff Corwin’s violent methods.
- Shadow figures: Apparitions in colonial-era clothing have been spotted moving through hallways or peering from windows at night.
- Famous ghost photograph: In the 1980s, a real estate agent taking promotional photos for the property developed one image that appeared to show a black-haired woman in period dress, though no one had been present. The photograph has since become one of Salem’s most circulated ghost images.
- Disembodied voices and cold spots: Guests staying overnight have documented unexplained temperature drops and faint whispers echoing through the rooms.
The Merchant Hotel Today
Despite its haunted reputation, the Joshua Ward House underwent an extensive renovation and reopened as The Merchant Hotel in 2015. The boutique inn blends modern luxury with historic architecture, attracting both history enthusiasts and paranormal seekers. While the hotel does not formally market itself as “haunted,” its ghostly reputation remains a central part of Salem lore.
Guests who stay overnight often come in hopes of experiencing the unexplained, and paranormal investigators regularly include the house on lists of New England’s most haunted locations.
