One of Texas’ most notorious haunted destinations has abruptly gone dark. The Yorktown Memorial Hospital, a long-abandoned facility turned ghost-tour hotspot, was suddenly closed to the public this week after city officials cited safety concerns.
The decision has left paranormal enthusiasts stunned and the property’s operators scrambling for answers, as the closure comes at the height of ghost-hunting season.
A History of Hauntings
Built in the 1950s and operated by the Felician Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church, Yorktown Memorial Hospital once served as a small-town medical center before closing its doors in 1986. In the decades since, the building gained a reputation as one of Texas’ most haunted sites.
Visitors, paranormal investigators, and TV crews claimed to encounter shadowy figures, disembodied voices, and unexplained movements. The hospital became a staple of ghost-hunting tours across the U.S., drawing thrill-seekers year-round.
Sudden Closure
According to the operators, Curious Twins Tours & Events, the City of Yorktown gave them only 15 minutes’ noticebefore shutting down the property, citing unspecified structural safety issues.
Company representatives say no clear remediation guidance was offered and that the abrupt closure has already impacted bookings and community events. “We’ve worked hard to preserve the hospital’s history while making it accessible to the public,” the owners wrote in a public statement, describing the shutdown as “devastating.”
Push for Historic Landmark Status
In response, Curious Twins Tours & Events announced plans to seek historic-landmark status for Yorktown Memorial. Such a designation could not only protect the building but also open avenues for funding preservation work.
Local historians and paranormal groups have voiced support, arguing that the hospital is both a cultural landmark and an important part of Yorktown’s identity.
The Future of Yorktown’s Ghost Tourism
For now, the building is off-limits, leaving ghost tours and paranormal investigations in limbo. The sudden halt underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining aging, privately operated haunted sites that rely heavily on tourism revenue.
