Every article on Beyond Haunted goes through the same process before it’s published. Here’s exactly how we work and how we handle the differences between history and legend.
Our process
- Research. We start with primary and reputable secondary sources: historical societies, newspaper archives, property and census records, official site information, and established regional histories. Where a claim has a paper trail, we follow it.
- Drafting. We use modern writing tools including AI to help organize research and shape a first draft, the way a newsroom uses research assistants. Nothing is published as-is.
- Human review and fact-checking. A person reviews every article before it goes live: checking dates, names, addresses, and historical claims against the sources, cutting anything we can’t support, and clearly separating documented history from folklore and rumor.
- Location verification. We confirm each location’s real-world address and coordinates, so the map and directions on every page are accurate.
- Updates and corrections. Places change and new information surfaces. We revisit articles over time, and we correct mistakes promptly when they’re pointed out.
History vs. legend
Many hauntings are, at their core, stories passed down, embellished, and impossible to prove. We think those stories are worth telling. But we never present a legend as documented fact. When something is folklore, rumor, or a single unverified account, we say so plainly.
